Osman was a member of the O’uz Turkmen’s Kay branch. His father, Ertugrul, had founded a principality with Sögüt as its capital. Osman and the Muslim frontier fighters (Ghazis) under his command engaged in a slow-moving and tenacious struggle with the Byzantines, who were attempting to defend their lands in the hinterland of the Asiatic shore opposite Constantinople (now Istanbul), using Sögüt as their base of operations. Osman steadily expanded his rule over a number of ancient Byzantine strongholds, including Yenişehir, giving the Ottomans a solid basis from which to besiege Bursa and Nicaea (now Znik), in northwest Anatolia. Orhan, the successor to Osman, conquered Bursa on April 6, 1326. Osman is said to have passed away according to Ottoman legend shortly after Bursa was taken, but some academics disagree.

Sultan, Arabic Suln, originally denoted moral or spiritual authority, according to the Qur’an; nevertheless, from the 11th century on, Muslim monarchs began using the term as a title. Osman Gazi, who ruled for 27 years until his death in 1326, assumed control of the Kayi Clan in Sogut when he was just 23 years old. He later rose to the throne after the death of his father.
He surrounded himself with many Turcoman tribes after ascending to the throne and joined forces with Alaeddin Keykubad I of the Seljuks to fight the Byzantines. After Alaaddin’s banishment, the Seljuk Empire was left without a ruler until Osman Gazi united them under his reign in 1299, marking the beginning of the Seljuk Empire.
