A recent research report by the United Nations University, a think tank of the United Nations, has revealed that the process of mining or creating the digital currency Bitcoin consumes more electricity than Pakistan every year.
Depending on the weather, the annual electricity consumption in Pakistan is 25 to 30 thousand megawatts, while the thousands of extremely powerful computers used to create Bitcoin around the world consume more than 35 thousand megawatts of electricity.
According to the report, the situation has become such that six to seven hours of load shedding has become the norm in the European country of Abkhazia due to Bitcoin mining. Until a few years ago, Abkhazia could easily get the required electricity from dams.
When Bitcoin was created, the need for electricity increased greatly, and it buys electricity from Russia at high prices.
As if this is the negative side of Bitcoin that it consumes a lot of electricity while creating it, which is not only burdening countries, but also harming the natural environment.
