Microplastic pollution is increasing bacterial resistance: Research

A study has found that microplastic pollution is strengthening bacteria and viruses in the body against antibiotics.

Regarding the research, researchers from Boston University said that it was quite surprising to see an increase in antimicrobial resistance of bacteria due to fine plastic particles.

In a statement, Niella Gross, a PhD student at the university, said that plastic provides a surface that bacteria can attach to and help them thrive.

It should be noted that according to the World Health Organization, bacterial antimicrobial resistance directly caused 1.27 million deaths in 2019, while it contributed to about 5 million deaths worldwide.

According to the World Bank, antimicrobial resistance could increase additional health costs by $ 1 trillion in the next 25 years.
