New type of venom-spewing scorpion discovered

Scientists have discovered a new species of scorpion in the Colombian rainforest that can spray venom.

The new species, Titis achilles, described in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, was found to be able to shoot venom more than a foot away, enough to strike the eyes of an approaching animal.

Study author Leo Liberio believes that this method of releasing venom evolved over time in scorpions to harm their predators.

The study found that this scorpion uses two different methods to spray venom. One, like a cobra, and the other, spraying venom from its tail.

Of the 2,500 known species of scorpions discovered so far, only two spray venom, one found in North America and one in Africa.
