Metal implants for MRI scans are dangerous to health, research finds

MRI scans have become a common test for diagnosing diseases, but experts from the University of New Mexico in the US have discovered through research that the material containing the metal element Gadolinium, which is injected into the human body to clear the image before an MRI scan, is dangerous to health.

Small particles of this metal remain in the brain, kidneys, blood and liver for many years. When the patient eats foods containing oxalic acid, this acid combines with the metal particles to form larger particles.

Gadolinium particles then reach the brain, heart, liver, kidneys and joints, damaging them and causing diseases.

Experts have warned that people who undergo MRI scans should stay away from foods containing oxalic acid, such as greens, beans, nuts and foods rich in vitamin C, for some time. The work of finding a human-friendly alternative to Gadolinium has begun.
